The Orient Valley from Alaró

This circular walk begins in the atmospheric town of Alaró on the eastern side of the Serra de Tramuntana, follows a pass which leads to the Orient Valley, summits Puig d’Alaró and enables you to explore the ruins of the castle there and learn about its history before returning to Alaró on a track and road.

The walk

From the church in the centre of Alaró we head north and ascend the Cami de s’Estret through a rocky valley. We then pass through woodland and climb stone steps between boulders known as Pas de s’Escaleta. The path descends with a view across the fertile and green Orient Valley.

After a short section along a road we take a track past olives. It becomes a path which climbs through woodland to the Pla des Pouet. From here we follow a stone path which rises to the first of two fortified entrances to the castle. We continue finding our way to a small chapel and the Hostatgeria. At the summit we can enjoy views over Alaró and the plains on one side and the mountains on the other. It makes an ideal location for lunch.

The castle of Alaró is one of three rocky castles on the island. It was first built in Moorish times and over time has proved to be almost impregnable. The guide will explain the history and legends of the castle. It is an important reference point in Mallorcan culture.

Optional Extension

There is the option of exploring the ruins of the Prison of the Moors on the southern flank of the castle and the entrance to the Cave of Saint Anthony. The views from the Prison are dramatic. This extension will add 40 minutes to the walk but is recommended.

Initially retracing our steps from the summit we then take a zigzag path which leads to a rough surfaced road. We descend this winding road. The gradient eases and we join the Ma-2100 road into Alaró. Here there is the chance to enjoy a refreshing drink.

Fantastic experience with a guide who knows his way!
